Shipping Weights

uses real time information provided by UPS to get the best possible freight quote. This quote is based on:
1) Type of UPS service
2) Order weight
3) Destination.

The shipping weight used here is the actual weight or the dimensional weight of the carton the item will be shipped in. (Whichever is greater.) The dimensional weight must be used because a significant number of customers choose to ship via UPS Next Day, Second Day or 3 Day select service. When using any of these expedited services, UPS charges an amount based on the carton size not the actual weight. See UPS.com for details.

Dollars and Cents on a ground shipment.
A Pelican 1650 in the box weighs 31 pounds, and has dimensions of 34x21x12. The dimensional weight (34x21x12/194) is 45 pounds. Pelican 1650s are shipped based on the dimensional weight of 45 lbs.

The chart below shows freight charges to Los Angeles for this package at both weights.

31 lbs. 45 lbs. Difference
Ground $8.47 $10.19 $1.72
Over Night $41.24 $52.63 $11.39

The difference between 31 and 45 pounds on this ground shipment is less than $2. On the other hand, if it were shipped Over Night at 31 pounds,  other customers would have to pitch in and pay for the $11.39 not collected. If every 4th customer requests over night service, the first 3 need to be charged an extra $3.00 each to pay for that rush delivery.

While it is possible to overcome these obstacles and provide exact freight charges for every type of package and delivery service, it takes a shopping cart system that can get pretty pricey. This too would require an increase in prices. Cases4less.com prefers to make freight charges as close as possible for everyone and keep prices the lowest on the net.
